Elsewhere in an Amish community, a white witch continued a ritual to bind Tobi's spirit to a single human body, preventing them from influencing the world beyond. Sometime in Tobi made himself known to the youngest daughter of Julie, Kristi.
Julie's boyfriend Dennis, who was living with the family at the time, first recorded Tobi accidently and unknowingly in September , when Kristi was playing with it under a trampoline during her sister Katie's ninth birthday party.
Tobi took up residence inside a crawlspace in Kristi's and Katie's room and engaged in late-night games with Kristi. They would play hide and seek and climb on furniture. At one point Kristi jumped twelve feet from a ledge into the safety of Tobi's waiting arms. During the day Kristi and Tobi continued contact through tea parties and "the knocking game"; Kristi would knock three times on a closet door, and Tobi would knock back from inside.
The rest of the family assumed Tobi was an imaginary friend Kristi had dreamed up; Dennis was amused by Kristi's knocking game and even offered Tobi a pat on the shoulder while particpating in a tea party. Kristi was not the only person Tobi played with. Dennis first discovered Tobi when an earthquake disrupted a sex tape he was making with Julie; the camera recorded Tobi shaking a cloud of dust off himself.
Tobi once followed Julie downstairs as she had a midnight snack, but expressed displeasure with Julie saying, "God damn it! When the girls' baby sitter Lisa took a sheet from Tobi's crawl space and pretended to be "the ghost", Tobi snuck up on her while she was studying and dropped the sheet at her feet.
When Lisa went to put the sheet back, Tobi blew a puff of air in her face and scared her. Tobi also appeared to Katie during a game of Bloody Mary, slamming a door when she and Kristie left for a swimming pool. In Paranormal Activity 3 , Tobi at first maintained a friendly relationship with Kristi, but showed animosity for her family from the very start.
While investigating the sounds of Tobi's footsteps, Dennis follows Tobi into its crawlspace. Tobi was deeply offended and vented to Kristi about the incident, but Kristi stood up for Dennis, calling him "sweet". Tobi later spooked Dennis through loud noises and by slamming window shutters behind him. Dennis and later Julie also provoked Tobi by interrogating Kristi about her games and conversations with it, things Tobi had told Kristi to keep secret.
When Kristi and Katie were having a backyard campout, Tobi became frustrated when it was unable to find Kristi and took it out on Dennis and Julie, locking them inside the house and separating them.
He lured Dennis into the girls' room to get him out of the way while he punished Julie, but Dennis retrieved Julie before Tobi could get her alone in their bathroom.
Tobi let the matter drop after Julie brought the girls back into the house. Katie accidentally-on-purpose provoked Tobi multiple times through picking on Kristi, summoning him twice through Bloody Mary games, and also by taunting him before entering his crawlspace. Tobi locked her inside of it twice, only letting her out after Julie and later Kristi interfered. When Katie was chasing Kristi up stairs in pursuit of a doll, Tobi blocked her way and yanked her up off the floor by her hair.
Katie enraged Tobi to the point he stayed permanently angry with her, even over fifteen years later. On the night of September 22, , Tobi possessed Kristi and walked her into Dennis and Julie's room, where Kristi stood and stared at the couple for over an hour. Kristi was deeply disturbed by this, in addition to a request Tobi made later that night. Tobi was growing impatient and wanted to mate with Kristi to father her child in hopes of producing the male heir he had been promised.
Kristi refused to give in to his demands and told v to stop talking to her. In a rage, Tobi gave Kristi a high fever and brutally attacked Katie and Dennis' assistant Randy the following day. Later that night the furious demon trashed the girls' room and dragged Katie into his crawlspace, holding her hostage until Kristi agreed to do as he asked.
Tobi told her to go to Lois' house to prepare for a binding ritual. Julie at first denied Kristi's plea and Tobi's very existence. In response, Tobi dropped the kitchen furniture on her.
When the family arrived at Lois' house, Kristi and Tobi played in the yard while Julie told Lois about everything that was happening. That night Lois summoned the witch coven and pulled Kristi and even Katie out of their bed to prepare for the ritual.
Julie and Dennis were awoken by the sounds of approaching vehicles and Julie went to investigate. She witnessed the coven in the garage and was murdered, presumably by Tobi. Dennis followed her and discovered Julie's death when Tobi threw her body down a flight of stairs on top of him. When Dennis found Kristi cowering in a nearby room. Tobi attacked the both of them and chased them into a closet. Unable to get to them, Tobi possessed Katie and lured Dennis over to him by making her cry over Julie's fallen body.
When Dennis got close enough Tobi had Katie break both his legs. Tobi later snapped Dennis' spine, folding him over backwards and killing him. Lois then took Kristi and Katie upstairs to finish the ritual. Tobi followed after spitefully stomping on Dennis's camera.
Sometime later, a fire destroys Julie's house. It's possible that the Coven started this fire after planting Julie and Dennis's bodies inside the house to cover up their murders. Paranormal Activity became one of Blumhouse's earliest movies and while the initial plan was to remake it with a larger budget once it was picked up by Paramount, a hugely successful audience screening convinced them otherwise. Paranormal Activity was re-edited for its theatrical release and a new ending was shot, with Steven Spielberg himself suggesting the final jump scare where a possessed Katie lunges at the camera.
The movie became a massive success and soon kicked off a long-running franchise that dethroned the Saw series at the box-office. Subsequent sequels expanded the mythology, exploring Katie's backstory, with prequel Paranormal Activity 3 revealing how the demon first made itself known with Katie's young sister Kristi dubbing it "Toby. The series also received a Japanese spinoff with 's Paranormal Activity 2: Tokyo Night , though the events of that film have never been mentioned in the rest of the series.
The backstory behind this entity is that Katie's grandmother Lois made a deal with a coven of witches for wealth and power in exchange for a demon taking the soul of her family's first-born son. Paranormal Activity's Toby has to wait a long time for a male to be born into the family, though he first makes himself known to Katie and Kristi when they are children in Paranormal Activity 2 - which is set at the same time as the original - is set in Kristi's home, with Toby coming to collect her newborn son Hunter.
It felt like that was played out. I do love the idea that there are these devices, these cameras, that just give you a sense of another realm.
How did you come to the decision to make on what the character of Toby would look like, you made him look real and organic, and more rooted.
It looks like [the demon] builds upon itself. How did you come to the conclusion of what Toby would look like on this camera? The demon always started out like a child, like a baby. The more attention you give it, the more fear you show, the larger it gets. It has yet to sort of cause fear in the house…. That was really the evolution of it all here. It was working with my artists, working with ILM.
Where do you go from here? Do you keep the door open for more? Look, the studio has said that this is the last of the franchise, unless somebody reboots it sometime down the road. That would be great. I have dreams that my kid will some day edit or direct one of these movies. Is there a big meeting with long predictions and idea? There were. We had a core team from the beginning. Obviously, Jason [Blum] and Oren from the beginning. Also, Ashley Brucks, who is the creative executive from the studio.
Adam Goodman, who was the president of the studio, the franchise has always been his baby. He was on it from day one. We added some conversation. This was sort of the culmination of a lot of conversations, and then obviously we had a ton while we were making this. It was Ashley, it was myself, it was the writers, the studio.
We all decided that this what what we wanted to do. Yeah, we did struggle a little bit, I think like any filmmaker would, as to how we wanted to do it.
