This superb free event includes a variety of food and drink stalls and a cookery marquee hosted by Ian McCulloch with cookery demos and fun audience participatory cook-offs, all on the shore of Loch Lomond, Scotland.

Presenting stalls from some of the surprising range of chilli farmers to be found in the South West as well as producers of delicious condiments and chilli orientated foods, the Great Dorset Chilli Festival is a celebration of exotic cultivation in rural Britain.

This was two adults and three children all of them above the age of four. Nowhere had I seen it was at this price and we saw a man and a couple of upset punters debating the price with one of the attendants.

We paid our entrance fee and made our way into the Dorset Chilli Festival and were met with about approx. None of them exhibited the beautiful stalls of brightly coloured chillies were hoping to see. In actual fact it was a miserable state of affairs. Many of the head chefs from those venues, such as Tony Borthwick, Mary Contini and Ondine's Roy Brett, will also be demo-cooking at the event, while Martin Wishart will create a temporary version of his cookery school at the festival.

Visitors can also browse a huge artisan producers' market, join tutored wine tastings, take cookery lessons from Waitrose, or hone their baking skills in a theatre sponsored by - but, of course - Peugeot. The Meadows, entrance on Melville Drive. Some food festivals don't actually offer that much food to eat, there and then. Dorset Seafood Festival, in contrast, is a huge briny buffet, a seafood street food extravaganza.

Over 60 stalls, many of them created especially for the festival by local restaurants, line the quayside, selling everything from hot bouillabaisse to - thanks to Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's Fish Fight - that suddenly fashionable sandwich, the mackerel bap. Other attractions include a fresh fish auction, the popular Fishtucker Trial, in which competitors eat unappetising fishy offcuts for charity last year's winner ate a raw conger eel liver , and a young Dorset seafood chef of the year competition, judged by Mark Hix.

This international show has been running in Nantwich for over years, and, last year, over 3, competing cheesemakers from over 24 countries attended.

These range from big brands to tiny artisan operators. Indeed, one of the blue cheese classes was won by Burt's Blue , a cheese made by hand in small batches just up the road in Altrincham. While it is primarily a trade show, the ICA opens its doors to the public on the Wednesday, as the part of the wider Nantwich Agricultural Show. Visitors can explore a huge air-conditioned marquee full of the world's best cheeses - including three Lancashires made by former Coronation Street star, Sean Wilson - and catch those housewives' favourites, James Martin and Gino d'Acampo , cooking in the chefs' demonstration theatre.

The near hysterical hormonal excitement that these two generate needs to seen to be believed. Dorfold Park, Chester Road, Nantwich. Now in its third year, FtF is, primarily, a huge advert for hosts Laverstoke Park, the organic and biodynamic farm which produces everything from excellent buffalo burgers to bottle-conditioned ale. However, there is enough going on - speciality food markets, chef demonstrations, artisan making 'n' baking workshops, educational lectures - that the sales pitch shouldn't feel too oppressive.

A big draw is the British BBQ Championships, in which amateurs and then, on Sunday, 18 professional chefs, will compete over the glowing coals.

Laverstoke Park, Berrytown Lane, Overton. Is this because the chilli is a uniquely interesting and complex ingredient? Or because whole the concept still sounds a bit wacky?
